How to Deep Drop for Snowy's, Barrel Fish, Etc... Day 2 Mustad Camp

Here is part one of day two on how to deep drop for snowy grouper, tile fish, barrel fish and more. Day two aboard the Two Conch's 39 foot Yellowfin. We start off by running and gunning, targeting mahi on the way to the humps. We deployed and trolled CJ squids around 7-8 knots on large spinning gear. The technique is quite simple, look for small packs of birds three to six birds and troll in the vicinity. The large bird packs are usually a sign of skip jacks, so we steered clear of them. We only managed a few chicken dolphin but that was okay. Once we arrived in 1000 plus feet of water, it was time to bust out the large electric reels and the 10lb lead. The rig of choice was a pre-rigged chicken rig with glow squids on each hook. At the top Capt. Austin attached two green glow lights to give off ambient light and to shine light on the baits, when you are 1000 feet deep it’s black as all get out. We rigged each hook with whole squid that had recently been thawed. It took a few minutes to get down to the ocean floor, once it did, we just slowly let out line and waited to see the rod tip twitch, after that we quickly engaged the reel and up came the groceries. I will admit, it’s not the most exhilarating way to fish but it will allow you to bring home some delicious fillets for the freezer. If you enjoyed this episode, please like, share and subscribe.
