Can you name a boat anything you want?

Boats don't need names (in general). No law states that you need to name your boat after buying it. But, people often name their boats as a tradition (that started around a thousand years ago). So, naming a boat is not mandatory, and you can decide whether you need it or not.

You may want to check your local registry before you submit your paperwork. Many places only allow one boat to have a name at that location.

Where do you put boat names?

The name and hailing port of your vessel must be marked together on a spot of your exterior hull that is clearly visible. Many recreational boat owners place this information on the stern and then place the boat name on both sides of the bow in the same way that it is required for commercial vessels.

What happens if you don't name your boat?

Unlike naming a boat, there's a ceremony one must follow. If you don't, you'll face the wrath of Posiden, and fall victim to bad luck on the sea. It's incredibly superstitious, but one shouldn't tempt fate. The process starts by removing every record of the boat's previous name.
